Long-lost Caravaggio painting discovered, art scholar claims

October 28, 2014

An art scholar in Florence is confident of having discovered the original of a long-lost Caravaggio painting, "Mary Magdalen in Ecstasy."

Several copies of the painting exist, but the original-- which Caravaggio was believed to have in his possession when he died in 1610-- had disappeared. Scholar Mimi Gregori announced that she has found the painting in a private collection, and now hopes to convince the owner to allow public displays.
