Pope encourages Cardinal Zen's pro-democracy activism in Hong Kong

October 24, 2014

Pope Francis encouraged Cardinal Joseph Zen’s pro-democracy activism during a brief encounter at the Vatican this week, the AsiaNews service reports.

Cardinal Zen, the retired Bishop of Hong Kong, has been an active participant in recent demonstrations demanding self-rule for the former British colony. The cardinal, a longtime critic of Chinese government repression, has strongly encouraged the “Occupy Hong Kong” movement in their defiance of Beijing.

On October 19, during a visit to Rome, Cardinal Zen met with Pope Francis after the beatification ceremony for Blessed Paul VI. The Pontiff, recognizing the Chinese cardinal, identified him as “the one who fights with a sling”—obviously comparing him with David in his confrontation with Goliath.

Let's all pray for Cardinal Zen and the students in Hong Kong.

I sincerely hope this means that the pope finally realizes that the communist government in Beijing has no problem in not keeping its agreements over Hong Kong, the UN or with any other government entity. It has everything to do with control and power and they will never give these up voluntarily. Pius XII knew it and was not afraid to call Mao on the carpet about it, either. Cardinal Zen understands this very well and isn't afraid to call it like it is, too.
