Egyptian government promoting Christian tourism
October 23, 2014
Egypt’s government is making an unprecedented effort to promote Christian tourism by calling attention to the country’s Coptic heritage.
Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab referred to the Coptic quarter of Cairo as “a symbol of the country’s identity” in an October 21 talk on religious tourism. He went on to say that Egypt takes pride in its history of religious diversity and coexistence, and noted that in the flight into Egypt “Jesus found peace and safety.”
Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Tawadros II said that “Egypt is working to present itself to the world as a positive and peaceful country,” and that success in that project could benefit the entire world.
