Papal appeal for workers whose jobs are in danger

October 23, 2014

At the conclusion of his October 22 general audience, Pope Francis issued an appeal on behalf of workers at Meridiana, an Italian airline that has announced plans to lay off over 1,300 employees.

The company lost over 216 million euros ($273 million) in 2012 and 95 million euros ($120 million) in 2013.

“I hope that a fair solution may be worked out, that considers above all the dignity of the human person and the essential needs of the families concerned,” Pope Francis said. “Please, I appeal to all those with responsibility: no family without work.”

You can't very support a family with a bouncing paycheck. Perhaps the Vatican could help the workers find employment with other airlines.
