Liturgical items on agenda of US bishops’ meeting

October 22, 2014

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will discuss several liturgical items at its November 10-13 meeting.

The bishops will vote on a revision of the current (1989) translation of the rite of dedication of a church and altar, vote on the first-ever official translation of the current rite of exorcism, and discuss modifications to the Revised Grail Psalms, which are eventually expected to be used in a revised English translation of the Liturgy of the Hours.

In addition, the bishops will consider a new supplement to the Liturgy of the Hours, which would take into account saints canonized in the last three decades, and discuss ministry to those with Celiac disease.

It's true that all this puttering should be relegated to committees, but we can hardly trust our bishops to do the right thing. Do we think they would come up with committees that could be trusted? We are reaping what has been sowed by 50+ years of failed catechetics and coddling of dissidents.

While Pope Francis challenges Cardinals to do some heavy lifting on how the Church can reach out to fallen away Catholics, the U.S. bishops dabble in the trivial that will have little or no effect on their disillusioned faithful. Where is the Holy Spirit when we need him/her?
