Benedict XVI will attend beatification of Paul VI

October 17, 2014

Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI will attend the beatification ceremony for Pope Paul VI on Sunday, October 19, the Vatican has announced.

The retired Pontiff is one of three living prelates who were elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Paul VI. The other two-- Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, the retired Archbishop of Sao Paulo; and Cardinal William Baum, the former head of the Apostolic Penitentiary-- are also expected to attend the beatification.

Pope Francis will preside at the beatification ceremony, which will be held in St. Peter's Square on Sunday morning. On Monday, Cardinal Angelo Scola of Milan-- the archdiocese that Paul VI led from 1954 until his election to the papacy in 1963-- will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the Roman basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.
