Vatican envoy says military action alone will not curb power of Islamic State

October 16, 2014

Archbishops Giorgio Linqua, the apostolic nuncio in Jordan, has disclosed that Vatican officials are convinced that military action will not be sufficient to break the growing power of the Islamic State.

The archbishop told the Jordan Times that at a meeting in Rome, to which Pope Francis had summoned the nuncios serving in the Middle East, there was a general agreement that military action against the Islamic State was justified and even necessary. But “bombs and tanks cannot stop ideology from spreading,” the Vatican diplomat said.

Archbishop Lingua said that in order to mount an effective campaign against Islamic extremism, responsible Muslims must cut off support for the jihadists. “It is important to check what is taught in the Islamic schools and mosques, and take immediate and effective actions when violence and intolerance are promoted,” he said.
