Papal commission on abuse moving forward in organizing work, AP reports

October 07, 2014

The commission appointed by Pope Francis to study the Church’s handling of sex-abuse complaints has organized its work and proposed new members, the Associated Press reports.

The commission, headed by Boston’s Cardinal Sean O’Malley, discussed its own internal statutes and its working schedule at a meeting this past weekend, according to AP. Marie Collins, a member of the commission, said that the group had agreed on a division of labor and a list of other potential candidates who would join the commission if approved by Pope Francis.

The sex-abuse commission, which was slower to organize than similar papal commissions studying Vatican financial and administrative affairs, is now looking for permanent office space. The group will be seeking to set policies for preventing abuse, helping victims, and holding bishops accountable for their handling of complaints.
