1 million in danger of starvation because of war in South Sudan

October 07, 2014

Political unrest in South Sudan is aggravating a severe food crisis, and could put 1 million people in immediate danger of starvation in the early months of 2015, the Fides news service reports.

Despite an official ceasefire, fighting has continued between government troops and rebels. The violence has devastated the country, driving over 1 million people from their homes, stopping agricultural production and interfering with both the production of agricultural crops and the delivery of humanitarian relief supplies. “This is not a crisis due to natural disaster, but caused by man,” said Tariq Reibl of Oxfam.
