India: university suspends chair honoring Mother Teresa

October 06, 2014

The government of India has suspended the Mother Teresa Chair at a national university, saying that the move was required by a shortage of funds.

The Mother Teresa Chair was set up at Indira Gandhi National Open University in 2010, with the support of then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s birth. The university has now discontinued the chair, along with several other endowed chairs, in a cost-cutting move.
