Academic, religious leaders encourage Pope to defend traditional marriage

September 30, 2014

A group of academic and religious leaders have joined in a direct appeal to Pope Francis to defend the Church’s traditional teaching on marriage.

“May we humbly suggest that in the context of marriage and family life your words are a call to personal responsibility, not only for our own spouses and children, but for the marriages of those God has put by our side: our relatives and friends, those in our churches and in our schools,” write the 48 signatories. They include American Evangelical leader Rick Warren, former Italian senate president Marcelo Pera, and Harvard Law professor Mary Ann Glendon.

The statement suggests that the Pontifical Council for the Family should investigate the problems created by “no-fault” divorce laws, and recommends the establishment of “small communities of married couples who would support each other unconditionally in their vocations to married life.

It is a letter that is a step forward, but the letter does not touch the "third rail" of contemporary marriage—THE PILL. Until we come out publicly as laymen, priests, bishops, and Pope and speak to the problem of the pill, we will not be able to get any real traction on the solution to the marriage problem.
