Hong Kong Cardinal calls for police restraint in response to demonstrators

September 29, 2014

Cardinal John Tong Hon of Hong Kong has called for a restrained police response to demonstrations by democracy activist in the city’s financial district.

Decrying the “regrettable” violence of clashes between police and demonstrators in recent days, Cardinal Tong asked the government to “put the personal safety of fellow citizens as her prime concern.” He asked the police to show “restrain in deployment of force” and challenged officials to listen “to the voice of the younger generation.” The cardinal also urged demonstrators to be calm.

The Hong Kong diocese has supported a drive for universal suffrage, and in a 2013 statement said that if the citizens of Hong Kong are not granted the right to self-determination, “civil disobedience is justified.” Cardinal Joseph Zen, the retired Bishop of Hong Kong, has been a key figure in the movement for democracy, and has joined the demonstrators in the center city.

That is a in problem dealing with communist governments (and one the Vatican would be wise to understand).
