Diocese announces plans for redesign of Crystal Cathedral
September 25, 2014
The Diocese of Orange in California has announced its plans to transform Crystal Cathedral, which it acquired in 2012, into Christ Cathedral.
According to the Orange County Register, the first phase of the $113-million transformation βis centered around the most iconic aspect of the campus, the 78,000-square-foot glass cathedral. The 10,000 glass panes β which create excessive heat and light and bad acoustics β will be accentuated with new, white panels, called petals, that will open at varying degrees.β
The report continued:
From the outside, the building will still look like a glass cathedral. But from inside, worshipers will see slivers of light, not a full view of the outside world. The idea is to keep worshipers focused on the altar. The petals also will have outside lights, creating an effect the design committee calls the Box of Stars.

(Sarcasm alert!) It sure sounds like the kind of thing Pope Francis or Jesus would do with Church funds. They are probably going to include a soup kitchen and dormitory for the homeless in the renovation.

$57.5 million to buy it, $113 to renovate it. Seems to me it would have been better to sell it for salvage and then put up a proper Catholic Cathedral with maybe a few flying buttresses thrown in just for the thrill of it.

Amazing how the cost of this Protestant church keeps skyrocketing - who will pay? Of course, you can watch Star Trek on the church grounds or have dinner there with some local chef. Maybe they can conduct a food drive for the poor who walk by or provide jobs to the many unemployed? Right.
