Syria: prelate questions US airstrikes

September 25, 2014

The Armenian Catholic archbishop of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city, questioned whether US airstrikes against Islamic State bases will be of benefit to the nation’s Christians.

“This type of external involvement could worsen the situation,” Archbishop Boutros Marayati told the Fides news agency.

“People here do not have a clear view of what is going on, but certainly do not see the perpetrators of the bombings as liberators,” he added. “The uncertainty that everyone lives every day increases even more. A question fathers and mothers of families ask themselves is whether it is still possible to remain or if the only salvation is to escape.”

Escape is the best option for these poor, persecuted Christians in Syria. Assad has protected them in the past, but soon he will be taken out like Saddam. The U.S. government is not particularly concerned about atrocities committed against Christians.
