Victims of Communism will be focus of Pope's visit to Albania

September 15, 2014

During his September 21 visit to Albania, Pope Francis will pay tribute to the victims of Communism, the Vatican has announced.

Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, told reporters that the Pope will also emphasize relations between Christianity and Islam. Albania is a predominantly Muslim nation, although there is a substantial Christian minority.

Finally, the Pope will pay tribute to Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a native of Albania. The Holy Father will celebrate Mass in St. Teresa Square, in the capital city of Tirana.

The September 21 trip will be the 4th trip abroad for Pope Francis, and the first to a European country (other than Italy).
