Papal tribute to St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

September 15, 2014

Pope Francis has paid tribute of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows (1838-1862), an Italian Passionist who was canonized in 1920.

In a letter on the upcoming consecration of a new church at the saint’s shrine in Teramo, Italy, the Pontiff called upon the faithful to give thanks to God for all the benefits bestowed through the saint’s intercession. Describing the shrine as “among the most frequented in Italy and in Europe,” the Pope noted that many seek the saint’s intercession, confess their sins, and attend Mass there.

Pope Francis called upon Cardinal Ennio Antonelli, his special envoy to the dedication of the new church, to encourage the faithful to strive for a “more diligent imitation of Christ” and to demonstrate “with new zeal, through the intercession of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, a special love for the Gospel and the Church.”
