Vatican expert predicts lively Synod, sees Economic secretariat as crucial to Pope's reforms

September 08, 2014

Vatican journalist John Allen, writing for Crux, predicts that the October meeting of the Synod of Bishops will be much more newsworthy than previous sessions.

Pope Francis, Allen explains, “seems to want these gatherings to be more like synods in the early centuries of Catholicism, or in Orthodox Christianity today, with a decision-making role.” The Synod discussions promise to be lively, and its recommendations are not foregone conclusions.

Allen also underlines the importance of the Secretariat for the Economy, taking note of how quickly Cardinal George Pell has moved to rationalized the Vatican’s financial affairs. Allen concludes that “from here on out, the success or failure of the pope’s reform rests largely on his shoulders.”
