Admission of sin is crucial step toward Christ, Pope tells congregation

September 04, 2014

In his homily at a September 4 morning Mass at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, Pope Francis told his congregation that recognizing one’s own sinfulness is essential to spiritual progress.

“If a Christian is incapable of seeing his sins and his salvation in the blood of Christ, he has only gone half-way,” the Pope said; “He is a tepid Christian.” He went on to say that parishes and Church institutions can become corrupt when their members rely on their own knowledge and goodness, rather than recognizing their weakness and relying on Jesus Christ.

The Pope reminded his congregation that St. Paul made a “scandalous” boast about his own sinfulness. He taught that a frank recognition of one’s own weakness is “the privileged place for an encounter with Christ.”
