SSPX priest celebrates Mass in Vatican basilica

August 29, 2014

A priest of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s basilica, with the approval of the “highest authority” of the Vatican basilica, the traditionalist group has announced.

Father Michel Sivry celebrated Mass on August 9, at the altar of St. Pius X, for a congregation of French pilgrims associated with the SSPX. A French video crew recorded the Mass.

The SSPX has not identified the Vatican official who approved the use of St. Peter’s basilica, nor indicated whether that official was fully aware of the priest’s irregular canonical status.
