Pope calls Peres, Abbas, to plead for peace

July 18, 2014

Pope Francis has placed personal phone calls to Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a bid to stem the renewed conflict in the Holy Land.

The Pope called "to share his very serious concerns regarding the current situation of conflict involving in particular the Gaza Strip," the Vatican announced. Pope Francis reminded both leaders of their June 8 meeting at the Vatican, at which they had joined in prayers for peace. He asked each to make a special effort to promote an end to the latest round of violence.

"The Pope called "to share his very serious concerns regarding the current situation of conflict involving in particular the Gaza Strip," the Vatican announced. Pope Francis reminded both leaders of their June 8 meeting at the Vatican, at which they had joined in prayers for peaceT. He asked each to make a special effort to promote an end to the latest round of violence." There is little more striking a reality check than this difficult paragraph. It is a sad paragraph indeed.
