Oregon bishop urges parents to protest use of vaccines drawn from fetal cells
March 05, 2009
Writing in his diocesan newspaper, the Catholic Sentinel, Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, Oregon has encouraged parents to protest the use of vaccines derived from fetal-cell tissues. Citing the Vatican document Dignitatis Personae, Bishop Vasa said that parents can be morally justified in allowing the use of these vaccines, since they protect children from serious diseases. However, he said, the Vatican instruction also tells Catholics that they have a moral obligation to campaign for the availability of other vaccines, derived from morally acceptable sources. The bishop noted that a Japanese vaccine for use against rubella and hepatitis A-- currently unavailable in the US market-- would be a morally preferable option. Families should ask their doctors to press for the availability of that vaccine.
