Cause opened for beatification of American nun who challenged Billy the Kid

June 27, 2014

An American woman religious who stopped an execution and faced down the legendary outlaw Billy the Kid while serving in the New Mexico in the late 19th century could be on the path to beatification.

Archbishop Michael Sheehan of Santa Fe has announced that the Vatican has approved the opening of a cause for the beatification of Sister Blandina Segale, who came to New Mexico to work with the poor and the sick, but took such a bold approach to preventing violence that she became known as the “Fastest Nun in the West.”
