Malaysia: sharia conviction of Catholic overturned
June 19, 2014
A sharia appellate court in Malaysia has overturned the March conviction of Halimah, an Indonesian Catholic migrant worker, and ordered a retrial.
The woman, an illiterate massage therapist who was found guilty of being in close proximity with a member of the opposite sex, is believed to be the first Christian convicted by a sharia court in Malaysia.
The Indonesian consul general has advocated on her behalf, arguing that as a Catholic she should not fall under the court’s jurisdiction, according to a Malay Mail report.
