Vatican plays special role in peace process, says Bethlehem's mayor
May 30, 2014
The mayor of Bethlehem says that the Vatican has a unique role in preserving the ancient city and promoting the cause of peace.
Mayor Vera Baboun told the Catholic News Agency that the strong bonds between Bethlehem and the Holy See result in “a kind of relationship of connection, empowerment, and keeping the star of Bethlehem lit.” The visit by Pope Francis gave new impetus to the peace process, she said.
Baboun illustrated the impact of the papal visit by recalling that when Pope Francis met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, he gave the Palestinian leader a pen. Abbas, she said, responded: “I will use your gift when signing the peace agreement.”
