Malta approves civil unions

April 15, 2014

The heavily Catholic island nation of Malta has allowed for legal recognition of same-sex unions, and adoption of children by homosexual couples.

The new legislation, despite opposition from the Catholic hierarchy, was approved unanimously by the Maltese parliament. The law will allow for registration of civil unions, rather than same-sex marriage.
