Italian court overturns law against donated sperm, eggs

Italy’s Constitutional Court has overturned a law that prohibited a ban on the use of donated sperm and eggs for human reproduction.
The lawyers who challenged the Italian law hailed the ruling as a vindication of “the right to procreate.” The European court of Human Rights had already ruled that the Italian law violated fundamental human rights.
The Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana condemned the court’s ruling as “Italy’s latest folly.” While admitting that the decision was not a surprise, Famiglia Cristiana observed that the court had cleared the way for “wild” possibilities of reproduction unassociated with marital acts.
