Irish priest, returned to ministry after acquittal on abuse charges, takes new leave of absence

March 31, 2014

An Irish priest who was restored to ministry after being cleared of abuse charges has taken a new leave of absence, apparently shaken by the emotional fallout from dealing with the allegations against him.

Father Eugene Boland had returned to active ministry in the Derry diocese just two weeks ago, after being found not guilty of abuse charges. A spokesman for the diocese said that Father Boland had been in therapy to prepare for his return to parish work. “However, it has all too quickly become clear to Fr. Boland and diocesan authorities that he is not ready.”
