Pope Francis confirms leadership of 3 Vatican departments

March 31, 2014

Pope Francis has confirmed the leadership of one curial congregation and two pontifical councils.

Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, who was appointed prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in 2011, will remain in his post. Archbishop José Rodríguez Carballo, OFM, has served as the congregation’s secretary since April.

Remaining in their current positions at the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue are Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president since 2007, and Father Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, MCCI, who has served as secretary since 2012.

Remaining in their current positions at the Pontifical Council for Culture are Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president since 2007; Bishop Carlos Alberto de Pinho Moreira Azevedo, delegate since 2011; and Bishop Barthélemy Adoukonou, who has served as secretary since 2009.

Pope Francis confirmed all the members and consultors of the two pontifical councils while adding several appointments of his own. At the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, he retained 12 previous members while appointing 32 new members. The majority of the new members are superiors of religious communities or diocesan bishops who are also members of religious communities.
