Pope confirms secretary of Italian bishops' conference

March 27, 2014

Pope Francis has named Bishop Nunzio Galantino of Cassano all Jonio as secretary-general of the Italian bishops’ conference, confirming him in a post that he has occupied since December.

Traditionally the president and secretary-general of the Italian bishops’ conference are named by the Pope. Pope Francis has suggested that the Italian bishops, like their counterparts in other countries, should select their own leaders. As a step in that direction, the Italian episcopal conference has asked the Pontiff to select a candidate from among nominees selected by the bishops.
