Pope mourns former Spanish prime minister

March 26, 2014

Pope Francis has sent a message of condolence to the people of Spain upon the death of Adolfo Suarez, the country's former prime minister, who died on March 23 at the age of 81.

The papal message was sent to Bishop Jesus Garcia Burillo of Avila, who presided at funeral services for the former leader in the city's cathedral on March 25. The Pope promised his prayers "for the eternal repose of this distinguished figure in recent Spanish history."

Suarez led the Spanish government from 1976 to 1981.
