Vatican staff unsettled by prospect of budget cuts

Vatican staff members are living with “real fear” because of the promise of budget cuts, an anonymous official told the Catholic Herald.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State, has ordered a freeze on hiring and wage increases, citing the need to cut expenses because of a budget shortfall. Lay employees are concerned about their future, the Herald reports, despite promises that there will be no layoffs.
