Pope Pius XII helped to rally support for the founding of the state of Israel, the Pave the Way Foundation has shown.
Research by the Pave the Way Foundation—a group dedicated to inter-religious understanding—has revealed that Pope Pius XII encouraged Catholic countries to support the UN partitioning of Palestinian territory that allowed for the Jewish homeland. Years earlier, while serving as a Vatican diplomat, then-Archbishop Eugenio Pacelli introduced the head of the Zionist Organization to Pope Benedict XV in 1917, and facilitated contacts between Zionist leaders and other Vatican officials.
The Pave the Way Foundation has been instrumental in encouraging research to counteract the charge that Pope Pius XII was unsympathetic to the Jewish cause in the face of the Nazi Holocaust.
