Archbishop Chaput, civic officials head to Vatican to discuss September 2015 event to Philadelphia

March 07, 2014

Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia will travel to Rome later this month with the city’s Mayor Michael Nutter and Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, to confer with Vatican officials about plans for the 8th World Meeting of Families, which will be held in Philadelphia in September 2015.

Archbishop Chaput said that the group hopes to meet with Pope Francis, encouraging him to attend the event. In the past, Pontiffs have regularly attended the World Meeting of Families. To date, the Vatican has not made any announcement as to whether or not Pope Francis will make the trip to Philadelphia.

Governor Corbett expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of the meeting, saying that the September 2015 event could generate $100 million in revenue for the local economy.
