Annual Good Friday collection to support Church in Holy Land

March 07, 2014

The prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches has appealed for generous support of the annual international Good Friday collection for the Church in the Holy Land.

Quoting Pope Francis, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri said that “my thoughts turn in a special way to the Holy Land where Christ lived, died and rose again … Every Catholic therefore owes a debt of thanks to the churches that live in that region.”

Referring to the “truly delicate” situation in the Middle East, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Egypt, Cardinal Sandri spoke about the plight of refugees and said that “one remains appalled by the number of kidnappings and murders of Christians in Syria and elsewhere, by the destruction of churches, homes, and schools.”

Cardinal Sandri’s letter requesting support for the Good Friday collection was sent to bishops throughout the world, together with a report from the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land listing the shrines, parishes, schools, and other works supported by the collection.
