Pope places 'affectionate' call to outgoing Italian premier

Pope Francis made a private phone call to Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta as the Italian leader prepared to leave office.
Letta—who was unseated by Matteo Renzi, an upstart member of his own Democratic Party—said that he “thanked the Pope from the bottom of his heart” for the friendly gesture, and would always remember it.
