Sharia will not be main source of law in new Tunisian constitution

January 06, 2014

The parliament of Tunisia has decided not to make Sharia the main source of law in the nation’s new constitution, Agence France-Presse reported.

The North African nation has taken an increasingly Islamist turn since the 2011 overthrow of the authoritarian regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali during the Arab Spring demonstrations.

In the new constitution, Islam will remain Tunisia’s official religion. The nation of 10.8 million is 98% Muslim; there are 25,000 Catholics.
