6.6 million attended papal audiences, ceremonies in 2013

January 02, 2014

More than 6.6 million people attended Vatican liturgical ceremonies and audiences at which Pope Francis presided in 2013, the Vatican has announced.

The prefecture of the papal household reported that 2.3 million people attended liturgical ceremonies at the Vatican, 2.7 million attended the Pope’s Sunday audiences, 1.5 million attended his public audiences on Wednesdays, and 87,000 attended private audiences. The office estimates that for all such Vatican events, the attendance was 6,623,000.

These attendance figures cover only events held at the Vatican. The Pope’s public appearances elsewhere—most notably his visit to Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day in July, but also including pastoral trips to Lapmedusa, Cagliari, and Assisi—are not included.

The figures only cover the appearances by Pope Francis following his election on March 13. Earlier public events at which Pope Benedict XVI presided are not included.
