Man sets himself on fire in St. Peter's Square; topless demonstrator arrested

December 19, 2013

A man set himself on fire in St. Peter’s Square on December 19, while in an unrelated incident a topless woman from the radical group Femen was detained by police before she gained access to the square.

The man who poured gasoline on himself and lit a fire has not been identified, nor do Vatican officials know his motives for the attempted suicide. Bystanders and police managed to extinguish the fire, and the man is now being treated in a Roman hospital for severe burns and smoke inhalation.

The FEMEN protester, a member of the Ukraine-based group, was approaching St. Peter’s square topless, with the word “abortion” painted on her arm, when police stopped her.
