New Vatican Secretary of State meets with diplomatic corps

December 13, 2013

Archbishop Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s new Secretary of State, met on December 13 with members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See.

“In a time in which many parts of the world are faced with numerous forms of violence and the persistence of social inequality, I would like to renew before you the guarantee of my willingness to collaborate in the search for peace and respect for the dignity of every human being,” the archbishop told the diplomats. Speaking in French, he exhorted them: “We must show that peace is possible, that it is not a utopia.”

Archbishop Parolin was meeting the newer members of the Vatican diplomatic corps for the first time. He was already well acquainted with most of the veteran diplomats, from his previous work in the Secretariat of State.
