Congo's president visits Vatican, speaks with Pope on African tensions

Pope Francis met on December 8 with President Denis Sassou N’Guesso of the Republic of the Congo.
A brief Vatican statement released after the meeting indicated that the conversation had focused on the humanitarian situation in the African country, the plight of refugees there, and the continued tensions in the region. The two also spoke about the role of the Catholic Church in the Congo, particularly in providing education and charitable help.
