New Vatican Secretary of State to take office Saturday; surgical recovery complete
November 13, 2013
Archbishop Piero Parolin, the new Secretary of State, will assume his new role on Saturday, November 16, the Vatican has announced.
Archbishop Parolin had been expected to take up his new duties on October 15. But a sudden illness forced him to miss the ceremony at which he was to be formally installed. The Vatican did not disclose the nature of his medical condition, but said that although it required urgent attention, it was not considered serious. After a surgical procedure he was released from a hospital in Padua on October 25, and has subsequently been recovering at his home in Veneto.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the outgoing Secretary of State, has now disclosed that his successor will be in his office on Saturday.
