Vatican plans summit for Eastern Catholic churches

October 29, 2013

The Vatican has called a “summit meeting” for the leaders of the Eastern churches in communion with the Holy See, to take place in November.

The meeting will take place at the Vatican on November 19-22, with Pope Francis. The topic for discussion will be the Eastern churches in the 50 years since Vatican II.

Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, the prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, announced the meeting on October 29, as he opened the academic year of the Pontifical Oriental Institute. The meeting, he said, would allow the leaders of the Eastern churches to “speak before the Pope on the situation of eastern Christians.”
