Vatican council sponsoring relay race in St. Peter's Square

October 15, 2013

The Pontifical Council for Culture has announced plans to sponsor a variety of sports events, including a relay-race in St. Peter’s Square on October 20 and the Vatican’s own cricket team.

The relay race will run up the Via della Conciliazione into St. Peter’s Square, where participants will be greeted by Pope Francis at the conclusion of his Sunday audience. Msgr. Melchor Sanchez de Toca, the undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture, told Vatican Radio: “I think think it would be a very powerful image to see a bishop or cardinal in a track suit running.”
