Pope will visit Sri Lanka, Church officials announce

September 09, 2013

Pope Francis has said that he will visit Sri Lanka, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Colombo has announced.

Father Benedict Joseph, the spokesman for the Church in Sri Lanka, said that the timing of the papal visit would soon be revealed. The Vatican has not yet made any announcement about plans for a papal voyage to the Asian nation.

A formal invitation from the government would be a prerequisite for a papal visit, but that is not regarded as a significant obstacle. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has already issued a friendly invitation to the Pontiff.
