Gay activists protest outside Russian Orthodox cathedral in San Francisco

August 29, 2013

Angered by a recent Russian ban on the distribution of pro-homosexuality information to minors, 25 gay activists staged a protest outside an Orthodox cathedral in San Francisco on August 25, according to a church press release and a local gay newspaper.

Activists carried signs with messages like “Putin + Russian Church = Homo Hate,” and one protestor chanted, “Hey, hey! Ho, ho! Stoli vodka has got to go!”

The staff of the cathedral read about the planned protest online and informed police. A bishop from Seattle and clergy from New York traveled to the San Francisco cathedral to offer their support.

“By divine mercy, neither the cathedral nor any parishioners suffered any violence from the protesters,” according to a press release from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, which was founded in 1920 and has been in full communion with the Moscow Patriarchate since 2007. “Members of the police secured the protest area and did not permit the breaking of any laws.”

Gosh, a whole 25 protesters?! Big deal. Remember what happened with Chick-fil-A when they supported traditional marriage? It seems a small minority of troubled people have managed to commandeer the mainstream press and the courts, and generate a groundswell of misguided sympathy and bad decisions. The vast majority of people in the US do NOT support gay 'marriage', but get short shrift in the press and the courts. Need to keep pressing to get better treatment by all media, and courts.

"Sodomite hoodlums" is neither helpful or Christian.I'm surprised Catholic Culture let this pass.

Repeatedly today I find myself admiring both the decisiveness of the Russian government in dealing with sodomite hoodlums and the fidelity of the Orthodox to basic Christian principles. Let us pray that Putin's example introduces some sense of shame into the mind of our amoral president and often immoral representatives in Congress. Let us also pray that the example of their Orthodox brethren finally helps introduce some backbone into most of our Catholic prelates.
