Pope to visit Turkey in 2014?

July 16, 2013

Pope Francis will visit Turkey in November 2014, according to a Turkish newspaper report.

The Vatican has not announced any plans for a papal trip to Turkey.

According to the daily Zaman, the Pope’s visit will come in response to an invitation that was extended by the Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, who made history in March by becoming the first Patriarch of Constantinople to attend the installation of a Roman Pontiff. At the time, the Orthodox prelate announced that he had asked Pope Francis to join him on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Zaman said that the Pope was likely to join the Ecumenical Patriarch for the feast of St. Andrew, the patron of the Constantinople see, on November 30.
