Christ's greatest miracle is healing us from sin, Pope says

July 04, 2013

The “most profound miracle” of Jesus Christ is the forgiveness of sins, Pope Francis reminded the congregation at a daily Mass in the Domus Sanctae Marthae on July 4.

Commenting on the Gospel account of Christ’s healing of the paralytic, the Pope observed that Jesus first said: “Courage, child, your sins are forgiven.” Only then did He perform the physical miracle. The curing of the man’s physical infirmity was a display of Christ’s authority, the Pope said; but the first healing—from sin—was a greater miracle.

That same miracle is offered for all people, the Pope continued. “This reconciliation is the re-creation of the world: this is the most profound mission of Jesus… He make us sons, with the liberty of sons.”

“We, who were slaves of sin-– He has made us all free,” the Pope said. “He has healed us at the very core of our existence.”

This man has a unique ability to shoot right to the heart of whatever matter he is addressing. Who would have thought forgiveness is the greatest miracle? But indeed it is! We are totally sinful, totally unworthy of even the smallest place in heaven, yet we are forgiven by the blood of the Lamb. Praise God our Father whose love for us made this possible!
