Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna told an English audience that special "signs" from the Holy Spirit guided the cardinal-electors to choose Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio in the March 2013 conclave.
The Austrian prelate said that only the movement of the Holy Spirit could explain how the conclave decided so quickly on the Argentine cardinal. He said that he was sure many cardinals received signs that told them: "He is the one."
Cardinal Schönborn said that he personally received two such signs. One occurred during the conclave, he said, and his oath of secrecy prevented him from speaking about it. But the other, he said, came just before the conclave, when he met friends he knew to be prayerful people, and asked for their advice. One of the friends, he said, whispered in his ear: "Bergoglio."
