European bishops’ conference backs Brussels archbishop following feminist protest

May 01, 2013

The Council of Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE) has issued a statement in support of Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard of Malines-Brussels, whose recent university lecture was disrupted by a lewd feminist protest.

The CCEE expressed “sincere closeness and solidarity and condemned these aggressive forms of religious intolerance.”

The CCEE’s presidency also “reaffirmed that it shared the position of the Belgian bishops’ conference, according to which ‘a democratic debate on the issues of society is only possible if everyone is allowed to express their ideas in mutual respect and freedom of expression.’”
