Swiss bishops approve 'morning-after pill' for rape victims

The Catholic bishops of Switzerland have followed German, Spanish, and some US bishops in authorizing the administration of the “morning-after pill” to rape victims at Catholic hospitals.

The Swiss bishops’ spokesman said that the use of the pill would be allowed only in cases when it would not have an abortifacient effect. The spokesman acknowledged the difficulty of determining whether a rape victim could already had ovulated. The “morning-after pill” is designed to prevent ovulation. There is a lively debate over the question of whether the pill can have an abortifacient effect after ovulation, by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.
